One of the core missions of The Atlanta Opera is to provide a wide variety of education and outreach opportunities for students of all ages. Below are professional development opportunities for young adults and educators.

High School Opera Institute (HSOI)

Calling high school voice students in grades I0-I2! Are you considering a career in music? Would you like to expand your knowledge of opera and hone your skills as a performer?

Be a part of The Atlanta Opera High School Opera Institute! Participants will attend monthly workshops and coaching sessions led byleading professionals in the music field. Topics include Preparing andAuditioning for a Role; Selecting a Music School; Characterization;Diction; and Vocal Coachings. Participants will also be invited toattend working Atlanta Opera rehearsals throughout the season, and willshowcase their work on a culminating spring concert.

Applications will be accepted from June 1 - August 24. Selected applicants will be invited to audition in the fall of 2012. Audition will consist of a song in English and an Italian song - both must be memorized. Individuals may also be asked to sing major scales or tonal memory exercises. Accompanist will be provided.


Join us for the showcase performance of the High School Opera Institute students of 2011-2012 on Sunday, June 10 at 4:00pm. High School Opera Institute Music Director, Walter Huff, will accompany students at Morningside Presbyterian Church. Audiences will enjoy selections by Mozart, Purcell, Handel, Copland, Gilbert & Sullivan, Donizetti, and more! FREE and open to the public.

Music!Words!Opera!

Music!Words!Opera! is an arts-integrated curriculum reflecting the highly interdisciplinary nature of opera and using the art form as a tool to aid students and teachers in their explorations of history, language, literature and music. Join us at The Atlanta Opera Center this summer for intensive training sessions to learn how to use the M!W!O! curriculum with your students.

Participating educators receive five full days of training led by OPERA America professionals, tickets to 2012-2013 Atlanta Opera Final Dress Rehearsals, invitations to attend supplemental teacher workshops, and special pricing for other in-school programming throughout the year.

Arts Administration Internships

Did you know that The Atlanta Opera offers arts administration internships for college students and recent graduates? The Atlanta Opera internships are designed to connect the learning goals of our interns to hands-on experiences and training in the field of arts administration. The Atlanta Opera internships are unpaid, however interns may earn college credit. The Atlanta Opera strives to make the internship a valuable and meaningful experience for college students and recent graduates. Interns gain a wide range of experience working in each of the company's departments including education, marketing, development, and production. Atlanta Opera interns are also provided with professional development training workshops, networking opportunities, guest speakers, presentations by department heads, and employee discount on Shop Opera merchandise. Interns are accepted for fall, spring, and summer semesters. To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume to Emmalee Iden, Director of Education.

Marketing and Communications Internship

The Atlanta Opera Marketing and Communications internships provide experience for college/university students and recent graduates in designing and implementing marketing and communications strategies and messaging. They offer hands-on experience with PR campaign support and the optimization of social media vehicles in publicizing events, performances, and initiatives. They also provide invaluable networking opportunities needed to launch or enhance careers in public relations, marketing, and social media. Interns are accepted for fall, spring, and summer semesters. To apply, please submit a cover letter, writing samples, and resume to Laura Soldati, Communications Manager.
